Mina de Dolores is a collage i produced that deals with the topics of land exploitation and vio- lence in the north of Mexico. Mina de Dolores is an open pit mine in Chihuahua, Mexico, oper- ated by the Pan American Silver corporation, a Canadian conglomerate. In 2008 the workers of the mine were held hostage by the paramilitary forces of the Sinaloa Cartel. Miners who tried to leave the premises were abducted or executed until the Drug cartel was repelled by the military forces. This situation prompted me to reflect on the many levels of exploitation that a mine can have; the workers exploit the land while they are exploited by the corporation and the criminal organizations that mine fear. Mina de Dolores is a schematic map of these many layers incorporating aspects of Mexican folklore, pop culture, national symbols and also found footage of the above-mentioned incident.

Following the production of Mina de Dolores, I created a Collage with elements of the water extraction industry in the city of Vienna. In this Collage, I took visual parts that refer to the geological dimensions that water extraction goes through and put it in perspective to the ar- cheo- and paleological dimensions of knowledge production. At the core of this work lies the question: is groundwater a fossil?.

This collage represents takes the Lake of Texcoco as the central actant of the cultural events that have had an enourmous impact on the Mexican historical identity. The Lago of Texcoco has been populated since the year 3000 b.C but around the year 1250 a. C the Mexica people settled at an island in the south-eastern part of the lake. From there they built an empire that grew very fast and became

the leading power in the region. The Aztec empire. When the Spanish Conquistadores ar- rived at the Atlantic coast in the 16th Century, it was relatively easy for them to find allies who would join in them against the Aztecs.

This collage tries to synthetize these actors at that time. But it focuses on the Lake where it all happened.

This is a collage for Cats.
